Directly from The Fotografiska show in New York comes to Monza THE BIGGEST EXHIBITION EVER DEDICATED TO VIVIAN MAIER.
More than 200 colour and black and white prints, plus contact sheets, original audio recordings with the photographer’s voice and various Super 8 films, visible FOR THE FIRST TIME only in this exhibition.
A formidable exploration of the unique human and artistic journey of the pioneering street photographer, it traces the themes and subjects characteristic of her style, providing a testament to the ‘dark side of the American Dream’ that reflects a changing nation.
A journey through time and a view of the world without innocence, with children looking lived-in and adults looking fatigued even in their leisure time. But also the art of photography seen as an outlet, used to express one’s emotions through images brimming with humanity, humour and beauty.
UNSEEN. The unseen photos of Vivian Maier is the title of the exhibition that the Villa Reale in Monza is dedicating, from 17 October 2024 to 26 January 2025, to one of the pioneers and greatest exponents of street photography.
Realised by Vertigo Syndrome in collaboration with diChroma photography, Unseen. The Never Seen Photos of Vivian Maier is the most important exhibition ever held in Italy on this extraordinary, very private artist. 220 photographs, divided into 9 sections, explore the themes and subjects characteristic of her style: from self-portraits to street scenes, from images of children to people on the fringes of society, venturing into unknown or little-known aspects of an unconventional human and artistic story.
The exhibition consists of a nucleus of black-and-white and colour photographs, which are very rare and until a few years ago had never been seen in public, to which are added Super 8-format films, contact sheets, audio with her voice and various objects that belonged to her, such as Rolleiflex and Leica cameras.
Some of this is previously unpublished material by Vivian Maier, which curator Anne Morin is presenting for the first time in this exhibition at the Villa Reale in Monza.
As with all exhibitions organised by Vertigo Syndrome, the exhibition is enriched by a series of collateral events including art workshops, lectures on the history of photography, workshops for children and various other initiatives closely related to the world of photography and the image in general.
To complete their knowledge of the photographer and her work, visitors to the exhibition will be invited to a special room, specially designed by Vertigo Syndrome, where they will experience the immersive experience of Being Vivian Maier…
